How to play powerball

PowerPlay

PowerPlay is your chance to boost any non-jackpot prizes you win and it only costs an extra US $1 per ticket. The Power Play is drawn using a random number generator (RNG). One selection is made from a pool of 42 balls, each marked with a multiplier amount: 24 marked 2x, 13 marked 3x, three marked 4x, two marked 5x, and a single 10x multiplier which is added as well if the jackpot for that draw is below US $150 million.

If you win a non-jackpot prize in the main draw, and have selected the Power Play option on your ticket, then you are guaranteed to have your prize increased according to the multiple on the ball drawn — up to an impressive 10x. The only exception to this is if you match five numbers, when the increased prize is fixed at US $2 million.

How Will You Know When You Win the Powerball Lottery?

To find out if you’ve won a Powerball prize, you need to check your numbers. If you are contacted by someone telling you you’ve won a jackpot, you’re probably dealing with a lottery scam.

Many television stations broadcast the Powerball drawings live. You can also check your local newspaper or Google for the results online.

You can bring your ticket to a gas station, convenience store, or other location which sells tickets, to let them check your winnings for you. Just be sure to sign your ticket first, to avoid being scammed out of a win. It’s best to ask for the winning numbers and check yourself than to hand over your ticket and ask if you’ve won.

There are also lottery apps that make it easy to check winning numbers. Some will even notify you if the tickets you have purchased come up as winners.

If you want to check the winning numbers online, see my list of winning lottery numbers by state for the right links.

Final Thoughts

There exists proven mathematical strategies for increasing your odds of winning prizes in any lotto game.

The most successful technique for beating the lottery is “number wheeling”. Number wheeling significantly improves your chances of winning multiple prizes in every game you enter.

Although a strategy does not exist that can show you how to guarantee a jackpot win there are strategies available that can increase your chances of winning a jackpot prize enough to make playing in a syndicate a really good idea. You will definitely increase your chances of winning medium and small prizes by playing as a part of a syndicate that wheels its numbers.

Lottery syndicates win more often simply because they have more buying power to wheel more numbers. Syndicates that do not wheel their numbers have no more chance of winning than an individual player does though. So your syndicate must wheel their numbers.

The more numbers you wheel, the higher your chances of winning prizes but the more tickets you will need to buy.

So that is why it is always a good idea to join a syndicate or start your own.

These powerful powerball strategies have been proven to work consistently and if used correctly can increase your chances of winning multiple times in multiple games on a consistent basis.

Once you are in a syndicate start by identifying a large amount of hot numbers from which you will pick a selection of numbers to play. The cost for entries will depend of the “wheel” you are using which in turn depends on the amount of hot numbers you choose.

The more numbers you wheel the better. More numbers wheeled means your odds will increase.

Have your syndicate members pool their ticket money together and wheel your numbers to guarantee you win. Keep your numbers and play them on a consistent basis. When you learn how to wheel you will know how to win powerball prizes on a consistent basis. So learn to do it now!

How to Win Powerball Prizes Using 1 Weird Technique

So, what is the one simple but weird technique for winning the lottery?

It is number wheeling and it works!

Try it out for yourself and you’ll be amazed at how much more “lucky” you get.

So How do You Win Powerball Prizes Consistently?

The key to winning on any game that is based on probability, such as any lottery game, is to devise a system that gives you the maximum number of chances of winning by using the laws of probability instead of letting them work against you.

Sounds pretty obvious I know but bear with me while I get a little technical and fully explain this concept (when it comes to actually playing using the system I am showing you don’t actually need to know the Math but it is good to understand how it works so you aren’t just relying on faith but can see the science at work).

The lottery, contrary to popular belief, is not really a game of luck. At least it is not just based purely on luck. You see the lotto is really a game that has a very solid foundation within the mathematics of probability.

Although the concept of probability is straight-forward and fairly easy to understand it can be a stretch and difficult for some people to understand the mechanics used to manipulate it. There is good news though.

The good news is that if you want to know how to win powerball prizes, or learn how to win the lottery in general, you do not need to understand the mechanics of manipulating probability – you just need to know how to use the mathematics of probability to your advantage!

Smart Strategies

So instead of going after just one big prize professional lotto players instead aim to win multiple medium prizes and a lot of smaller prizes consistently so they can build up their winnings over time.

Many lottery millionaires who admit to using a mathematical system have never won a jackpot prize in their lives. Instead they have built up their fortunes from multiple smaller wins which they have won over a period of time (and not all together). Of course there are also those who aimed for multiple jackpot wins as well but to win the jackpot multiple times does require luck even when you are using a scientifically based system (though you will have a much better chance than ordinary players).

What is the Power Play?

Power Play is an option that is currently offered in all states that sell Powerball tickets except California.  For an extra $1.00 per ticket you can increase your non-jackpot prize winnings by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times.  (The 10 times Power Play is only available when the jackpot is $150 million or less.)  The Power Play number is randomly drawn from a pool of multipliers that includes two 5Xs, three 4Xs, 13 3Xs, and 24 2Xs, plus one 10X when the jackpot is $150 million or less.

Power Play is not available in California because of state law that requires all lottery prizes to be paid out on a pari-mutuel basis.

The Power Play multiplier number is chosen at random just before the Powerball winning numbers are drawn.

A player must choose the Power Play option when they buy their Powerball ticket, and then the ticket must match one of the 9 Ways to Win (except the jackpot) before the multiplier takes effect.  Power Play costs an extra $1 per play.  See How to Play Powerball for more information.

Are lottery prizes taxable?

Lottery winnings of $600.01 and over are subject to Federal Withholding tax.  For
winnings of $600.01, up to and including $5,000, you will be issued a W-2G form
to report your winnings on your federal income tax form.  For winnings of
$5,000.01 and over, your state’s Department of Revenue removes the 24 percent federal
withholding before you receive your winnings check (or, if it is
an annuity, from each winnings check).  You then receive a W-2G form with each
check to submit with your 1040 form to show that the 24 percent federal
withholding already has been paid.  In addition to federal tax, your state will
make additional withholdings for taxes, and most states will deduct other money that
you may owe to the state, such as back taxes, child support, loan payments, etc.
In addition, like the federal tax withholding, the state tax withholding at the time
of prize payout may not be the total state tax owed at the end of the year.
You must consult your state division of taxation for more information about the total
state tax requirements for lottery winners.

The state tax withholdings are as follows:

Arizona  5% state withholding (Arizona residents), 6% state withholding (non-Arizona residents)

Powerball Strategies

Although there are a ton of “methods” designed to beat the lotto from picking significant dates to using a lottery number generator software and even those who rely on magic spells. However if you are really serious about winning Powerball prizes then you will need a much more scientific approach.

However, you should note that professional lottery players have a different mindset to most other players. When they target the powerball with their techniques they are not aiming for the top prize.

Just like the techniques involved in other lotto games such as pick 6 or pick 3, the most successful Powerball strategies do not target the jackpot prize. Why is this?

Well would you prefer to win one big prize of, say, $5 million or would you prefer to win 100 prizes with each prize being worth $500,000?

Obviously you would want the 20 smaller wins because they equal $50 million!

Also win you win only once you run the risk of having to share your prize with other potential winners. If there were a lot of winners on the draw you won on then you may end of getting much less than you expected and maybe not even enough to retire

How to Win Powerball

Now that you have your tickets, it’s time to wait for the twice-weekly drawings to see if your Powerball numbers come up. How do you win Powerball?

If you’ve matched all five numbers plus the Powerball number, you win the current jackpot. Congratulations! It’s important to note, however, that the Power Play multiplier doesn’t apply to jackpot wins.

According to Powerball rules, if you match five numbers but miss the Powerball, you can win $1 million (if you do not purchase Power Play) or $2 million (if you do purchase Power Play). Note that the Power Play multipliers do not apply here. Selecting Power Play just increases your win from $1 million to $2 million.

Without Power Play, four numbers plus the Powerball number wins $50,000. With Power Play, you can win between $100,000 and $250,000. Without the Powerball, matching four numbers wins between $100 and $500 — the same amount you’ll win if you match three balls and the Powerball.

Three balls by themselves, or two balls and the Powerball, wins between $7 and $35. One ball plus the Powerball or the Powerball by itself wins between $4 and $20.

If the annuity jackpot is equal to or more than $150 million, the 10x Power Play ball is removed from the drawing.

Go For Medium & Small Wins

When you wheel numbers in any lottery draw you give yourself multiple chances of winning multiple prizes. For example, if you are fortunate enough to pick all the correct numbers then you will win much more than just the 1 jackpot prize. Because the winning numbers you chose will come up on multiple lines (because you wheeled your numbers) you will have multiple entries with different combinations of those numbers on it. Thus you will win the jackpot, plus additional prizes.

For example, if you wheel 8 numbers and 6 of your numbers are in the winning numbers in a 6 from 49 game you will win 1 jackpot prize, plus at least 1 match 5 prize, multiple match 4 prizes and multiple match 3 prizes – thus increasing your overall winnings.

Obviously you will be more likely to only pick 5, 4 or 3 correct numbers but the principle remains the same; you will win multiple prizes and not just 1 when you have enough winning numbers in your wheel that would win only one prize for someone who is not wheeling their numbers.

This is where the power of wheeling truly lies because you can win multiple small and medium prizes by matching only a few correct numbers. And, when you can do this consistently over many games you can build up your profits nicely. If you reinvest a portion of your winnings so you can wheel even more numbers you can quickly start earning good regular money from your lotto plays.

This is how to win the lottery powerball prizes that can make you rich in the long-term rather than relying on just 1 jackpot win. Rather than winning one massive prize you can win multiple smaller prizes and win them consistently over weeks, months and even years.

How to Play Powerball

Powerball is easy to play — simply pick five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26. There are nine different prize tiers available in the main game, with the overall odds of winning any Powerball prize set at 1 in 24.87. All non-jackpot prizes have a fixed value.

For an additional US$1 per line, you can add the Power Play multiplier to your ticket, which could increase the value of any non-jackpot prize you might win. A separate Power Play number is drawn alongside the main balls in every game. The second-tier prize for matching five main Powerball numbers is typically US$1 million (DKK6.6 million), but if you match the Power Play number on the same ticket, your prize will increase to US$2 million (DKK13.3 million). With lower-tier prizes, your winnings could be multiplied by as much as five times if the 5x Power Play is drawn and you match it. However, the 10x feature is only an option when the advertised jackpot is worth US$150 million or less.

How to Play Powerball from Denmark

You can play Powerball from Denmark, with or without Power Play, by joining a syndicate of international players. When more people group together to buy tickets, they can better their odds of winning a Powerball prize. A syndicate of international players will link you to people across the globe in the hopes of landing a huge prize or even the coveted jackpot!

Powerball Prizes and Odds of Winning

There are a number of different prizes to be won on Powerball, starting with a fixed prize of US$4 for matching just the Powerball number itself and climbing all the way to the jackpot, which can easily reach nine figures in USD. Here are the different prize tiers, the odds of winning and the prizes available:

Prize Tier Odds of Winning Prize
Match 5 + Powerball 1:292,201,338 Jackpot
Match 5 1:11,688,053.52 $1 million
Match 4 + Powerball 1:913,129.18 $50,000
Match 4 $1:36,525.16 $100
Match 3 + Powerball $1:14,494.11 $100
Match 3 1:579.76 $7
Match 2 + Powerball 1:701.32 $7
Match 1 + Powerball 1:91.97 $4
Match Powerball 1:38.32 $4

How Much Does It Cost to Play Powerball?

Basic Powerball cards cost $2 apiece. For an additional dollar, you can add the PowerPlay option, which increases the size of your prize if you correctly guess one to five qualifying numbers. So the maximum cost of a single Powerball ticket is $3.

How Does PowerPlay Work?

If you purchase the PowerPlay option, the value of any prize you win for matching fewer than five balls will be multiplied by a randomly-drawn value between two and five. If the jackpot is worth less than $150 million, a 10x multiplier will be added to the mix.

For the payouts for matching five or six balls, the PowerPlay option works differently. The million-dollar prize that’s awarded for matching five white balls without the PowerBall is always doubled to $2 million with the PowerPlay option. The other multipliers don’t come into play.

The PowerPlay doesn’t affect the size of the jackpot, which is fixed whether you purchase the PowerPlay option or not. No multipliers apply to jackpot payouts.

Powerball FAQ

To play Powerball, you’ll need to get a ticket. A Powerball ticket consists of five numbers and a sixth number designated as the Powerball number.

Each Wednesday and Saturday night, a drawing is held. If your ticket’s numbers match some or all of the numbers drawn, you’ll win a variable sum of money. The amount you win depends on how much you match, and if you match all 6 numbers, you’ll win the grand prize.

A single ticket costs $2. With each ticket purchased, it’s possible to add the Power Play option, which costs $1 more.

There are nine ways to win at Powerball, based on the number of matches you make and whether you match the specific Powerball number. They are as follows:

  • Match all five numbers + the Powerball number – Jackpot
  • Match all five numbers – $1,000,000
  • Match four numbers + Powerball – $50,000
  • Match four numbers – $100
  • Match three numbers + Powerball – $100
  • Match three numbers – $7
  • Match two numbers + Powerball – $7
  • Match one number + Powerball – $4
  • Match Powerball – $4

An option called Power Play allows players to increase these values should they win.

Power Play is an option players can select that allows for an increase in non-jackpot prizes. In order to activate Power Play, players must pay $1 on top of the standard $2. A Power Play number of 2, 3, 4, 5 or (sometimes) 10 is generated at random for this ticket. If the ticket wins any prize below the $1,000,000 prize, the value is multiplied by the Power Play number. If the ticket wins the million dollar prize, that prize is doubled. The 10x Power Play number will only be a possibility when the jackpot is $150 million or lower. Please note that California doesn’t allow the Power Play option.

Yes, anyone can play Powerball regardless of whether he or she is a US Citizen or not. The caveat, however, is that a ticket must be purchased in the US to be valid. Services exist that will buy Powerball tickets in the US on behalf of foreign-located players. It’s important to research to make sure that the service you’re using is legitimate.

There is a 1 in 24.87 chance of winning a Powerball prize of some kind with each ticket, but the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338.

The full odds table is as follows:

  • Five + Powerball – 1 in 292,201,338
  • Five – 1 in 11,688,053.52
  • Four + Powerball – 1 in 913,129.18
  • Four – 1 in 36,525.16
  • Three + Powerball – 1 in 14,494.11
  • Three – 1 in 579.76
  • Two + Powerball – 1 in 701.32
  • One + Powerball – 1 in 91.97
  • Powerball – 1 in 38.32

Yes, to play Powerball you must be 18 years of age or older.

U.S. citizens will pay federal taxes on prizes of more than $5,000, and most states also withhold their own tax from the prize amount.

Non-US residents should consult their country’s laws to determine what their tax liability may be.

If a Powerball drawing is held and no ticket sold matches all 5 numbers plus Powerball, the jackpot rolls over to the next drawing. Each time this happens, the jackpot grows larger and larger.

There’s no limit on how high the jackpot can grow, and multiple roll-overs can produce jackpots that grow by hundreds of millions of dollars each time.

If multiple tickets are sold for a drawing that match all 5 numbers plus Powerball, the jackpot will be split evenly between the winners.

In January of 2016, the jackpot reached $1.58 billion dollars. Three winning tickets were sold, meaning that a prize of $528.5 million was awarded to each of the three ticket holders.

The expiration date on a winning Powerball ticket depends on the state in which it was purchased. Each state has its own rules, ranging from 90 days to as much as a year after the drawing was held. You’d be encouraged to consult with lottery officials in the state in which the ticket was purchased to know when your ticket expires.

The cut-off point for buying a ticket varies from state to state. Generally, it’s from one hour to two hours before the drawing is held.

Picking Your Numbers

Numbers that show up more frequently than other numbers are known as hot numbers.

Hot numbers are statistically more likely to come up in a winning line.

On the flip side those numbers that appear in winning lines less often are known as cold numbers.

Cold numbers are statistically less likely to come up in a winning line.

So, to give yourself a statistically higher chance of picking numbers that will come up in the winning line simply avoid cold numbers and choose your picks from the hot numbers.

How do you do this?

You simply look up your powerball official site for the hot and cold numbers.

Hot and cold numbers are only half the story of how to win at powerball though.

Most lottery players will simply choose random numbers for their picks.

Of course many players use significant dates or numbers that seem in some way special to them or that stand-out. They look for “signs” such as a repeating number that comes up consistently such as the number on a bus they see is the same as the number on a door they notice that matches a registration on a vehicle that caught their eye etc. This is probably more to do with selective attention than any mystical, Godly or universal intervention though.

Picking random numbers in any lotto game is useless and choosing your numbers based on their “significant” meanings will give you no added advantage of other players.

However there are certain sequences of numbers that are very unlikely to be drawn and so to give yourself a fighting chance in a lotto draw you should avoid those numbers that are less likely to come up in the winning line.

Once you’ve decided on a method for choosing your numbers you still have work to do. There is more you need to do to win the powerball after you have your chosen numbers.

Once you have picked your selection you must then wheel those numbers!

Power Play

Power Play is an add-on feature that allows players to multiply their non-jackpot prizes, for just $1 more per play! The multiplier number will be selected just before the draw.

How to Win

Prior to the official POWERBALL drawing conducted by MUSL, a Power Play multiplier number (between 2 and 5; 10 is included when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less) is selected and will be displayed during the draw, in which five out of 69 numbers (white balls) and a Powerball number between 1 and 26 (red ball) will be drawn at random. There are nine ways to win POWERBALL prizes by matching the winning numbers drawn in the official drawing for the date played. Match all five numbers plus the Powerball to win the jackpot or match any of the non-jackpot-winning combinations to win other great cash prizes!

All POWERBALL prizes are set payouts, except the jackpot. The jackpot prize will be shared among winners in all POWERBALL states. The jackpot will be paid in 30 annual payments or a one-time cash payment of a reduced amount. If there is no jackpot winner, the money in the jackpot pool rolls over to the next POWERBALL drawing.

All POWERBALL prizes must be claimed in the state where the ticket was purchased. POWERBALL prizes must be claimed within 180 days after the winning drawing date. Federal income taxes will be withheld from POWERBALL prizes as required by the Internal Revenue Code at the time payments are made. Any additional federal, state and/or local taxes shall be the responsibility of the winner. Prizes of up to $1 million may be claimed at a Florida Lottery district office. Prizes of more than $1 million must be claimed at Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee. Read more about claiming Lottery prizes.

Powerball
